Your strings are lying to you

A customer brought his guitar in last week convinced it needed a neck reset. Said it sounded dead, wouldn't hold tune, felt like playing through mud.

We changed his strings. Took four minutes. He sat there playing for half an hour afterwards, shaking his head. Same guitar. Completely different instrument.

Most players treat strings the way they treat petrol. Fill up when the tank's empty, grab whatever's on the shelf, get on with your day.

But strings aren't fuel. They're the single biggest thing shaping your acoustic tone. Slap phosphor bronze 12s on a guitar and it sounds completely different to the same guitar with 80/20 bronze 13s. The material shifts the colour. Gauge affects feel and volume. Coating stretches the lifespan. And old strings drag everything down.

Here's the part most people miss: a $12 pack of the right strings on a $500 guitar will sound better than a $2,000 guitar with three-month-old strings. Every time. The instrument matters, but the strings matter first.

It gets worse. Old strings don't just sound bad. They corrode. The winding pits and roughens. That grit you feel sliding up the neck? That's corrosion eating into the metal. It wears your frets faster and makes bending harder. Your guitar is literally fighting you over a $12 problem.

Next time your guitar sounds flat, check the strings before you blame the guitar. Look at the wound strings under a light. If they're discoloured, rough to the touch, or you can't remember when you last changed them, there's your answer.

Pick a string type that matches how you play. Phosphor bronze 12s if you're not sure. Coated if you hate changing strings or your sweat kills them fast. And change them before they go dead, not after. If you play 30 minutes a day, swap every six to eight weeks for uncoated, every three to four months for coated.

One more thing. After every session, wipe your strings down with a dry cloth. Ten seconds. Doubles their life. Keep a microfibre cloth in your case and make it habit.
